a Valentine’s Day special

With Valentine’s day on the horizon, what better occasion to experiment with some festive colours and styles. Whether you have a hot date planned with your beau or belle, you’re looking to grab the attention of a certain somebody, or you’re just heading out to paint the town red (no pun intended), it’s a great reason to look sharp and have fun with the bold colour palettes. This post is about having fun with reds, pinks, and white in an unconventional way, and putting a fun twist on classic looks. We created two different looks to hopefully give you some inspiration for your outfit.

From her | Aside from the ultra rich and feminine colours, whenever I think of Valentine’s day, all I can think of is lace, lace, lace! Something about this holiday really appeals to my love for traditionally feminine styles and prints. I paired a Victorian-style blouse with an A-line skirt, but kept it sweet and fresh with a mini hemline and polka dotted tights. And ladies, don’t forget to use your lips as an accessory too. I opted for a sultry brick red for the occasion.

From him | I’d say that this is my spin on a very classic look. You can’t go wrong with houndstooth or tweed, but pairing both together, on top of bright red pants and a patterned collared shirt, turns a conventional look into something fresh. I love the look of a bow tie and the dapper effect it creates. On my feet I opted for simple black dress shoes, as they pair well with my blazer’s black buttons. If you want to up the ante on Valentine’s day, give something like this a go.

From her | Although I’m opting for a sweeter and sexier number on February 14th, if you’re feeling spunky or are having a gal-entines day with your girlfriends instead, a less traditional outfit should be in your repertoire. I’ve always loved colour blocking, as they add an unexpected twist to your outfits. For Valentine’s Day in particular, pairing non-festive colours like purples and blues with the red and pink palette makes your look really fun and flirty. And of course, completing your look with a chunky statement necklace brings your already bold look up another notch.

From him | One of the most innovative, but daring ways to get the most out of your wardrobe is mixing patterns. Although it’s undoubtedly safest to stick to solid colours and single prints, this closes doors on so many outfit possibilities. I chose to mix a tight gingham pattern with thick stripes, to make both pieces stand out. Instead of wearing the standard black slacks, I chose to pair this with corduroys to add texture to my outfit and give it a different spin. And of course gents, the importance of socks. I opted for plain red socks to tie my Valentine’s look together, without getting too cheesy.
