what to wear: a summer wedding | for ladies

This post might be a little late in the game, but its still August, and that means there are still summer weddings to attend. Dressing for summer weddings may get a bit tricky, as the warmer weather can extend the festivities past the traditional indoor celebration. Garden weddings? Outdoor ceremonies? Patio receptions? Attending the wedding might be fun, but sometimes choosing an outfit for the occasion can be downright stressful. Trust me, I’ve been there!

So from my experiences (successful and unsuccessful!), here are a few style tips to keep in mind when you’re on the hunt for a stunning summer wedding outfit!

1. Overdress rather than underdress
The last thing you want to do is show up in a summer frock when everyone else is semi-formal! When in doubt, opt for a lace or chiffon cocktail dress. Chiffon and lace aren’t as “formal” as a satin gown, but they add instant glam without being over-the-top.

2. Colour
This may be kind of traditional of me, but avoid black if you can! Try out some colours that you normally wouldn’t wear everyday. Oranges? Pinks? Bright yellow? Summery florals? What better occasion to wear fun colours than at an event where everyone else will be glammed up.

3. Classy cuts
Although mesh panelling, peek-a-boo bras, and cut-outs are the style du jour, try and keeping your dresses fresh and classy. Keep hemlines below mid-thigh – you don’t want the wedding photos to be bordering on the club photo variety!

4. Play it safe
Bring a bolero, cardigan, or scarf to drape over your shoulders. Not only does this serve for functionality, as summer nights are starting to get cooler, but you might want to cover up your bare back or shoulders for conservative weddings or church ceremonies.

5. Accessorize
Just because you’re wearing a formal gown or cocktail dress, accessorizing is still important. You can go with a bold statement necklace and simple earrings, or if you’re not really a necklace gal, pull a T-swift and go for chandelier earrings and a bare neck.

Of course… there are some general rules that you should keep in mind. Make sure you check what colour the bridal party is wearing. I made this mistake last summer, and felt SO silly when I showed up in a teal chiffon dress – the same colour and style as the bridesmaids! Lastly, this one may be common sense, but don’t wear white. It’s the bride’s day to shine! When in doubt, stay away from creams and off-whites too.

I’ve always opted for colourful, flowy chiffon dresses for summer weddings. Ladies, what would you wear? And we didn’t forget about you gents! Look out for CJ’s mens feature, on what to wear to a summer wedding.
