A mini Nikon J1 review

So this post is a little different from our recent ones. All photos were taken with a Nikon J1, mounted with our cheapy, yet a goody 50mm 1.8, via a nifty adapter. Also extremely affordable, this adapter allows us to use all of our Nikkor lenses!

If you didn’t know, I’m kinda a camera fanatic (Katherine says this is the understatement of the year) and so I picked this up small body. While I love my DSLR, the thing can be so frickin’ big at times.

So one night, after our failed attempt at hitting up the Ottawa Poutine Fest, we spontaneously did an outfit post with our new toy! Though the J1 and other mirrorless cameras have a long way to go before they truly challenge the quality of today’s DSLRs (especially in low light), I’m very happy with the shots it produces. This camera purchase wasn’t about image quality, but rather about convenience. This thing is tiny and such a joy to carry around. That brings me to the point of all this (FINALLY, you’re all saying)…

“The best camera is the one you have with you.” ~ Chase Jarvis

Before I go on, this isn’t me being all wise, and this quote is not by any means original, but it spoke volumes when I first read it. Countless people have come to us, saying that they want to start a blog, or want to get into photography, but can’t because they don’t have a fancy camera. We’ve also even met people who’ve invested in high-end DSLRs, but admitted that it’s collecting dust since they’re a pain to bring everywhere. Or just too complicated.

Now I’m not saying we’re going abandon our DSLR, but what I’m saying is that if I want to snap a photo, I’ll bust out any camera that I have on me. Provided there is good light, the iPhone 4/4S takes fantastic photos. Throw on a Valencia filter or a VSCO cam edit and boom, you can have a great photo that’s ready to share.

So what am I saying then after all this? You can start any photo project with any camera that’s available to you! The important thing is about starting; worry about upgrading gear later. Some of the first fashion bloggers took photos of their outfits using the very first camera phones. How’d they look? Well not super great, but who cared? They were publishing great content, which readers appreciated.

So whatever it is that you may want to start, whether it be a blog or just taking photos of your friends, use that iPhone or whatever camera you have and get snappin’!

    Always follow, first time comment.
That quote resonated with me the first time I heard it. The funny thing is that all the great shots present themselves when you are without your camera.
    Love you guys!

Shucks thank you for following our blog and I couldn’t agree more with what you said. It’s not always about the quality of the shot, but rather that you got the shot in the first place!

The J1 is a great solution when it comes to portability but you still want great quality shots. Best of all, it’s really cheap if you check the used after markets!

Have something to say?
