Details make the man

There goes a saying “details make the difference” and I couldn’t agree more. When it comes to men’s fashion however, I like to say “details make the man”.

On my journey to dressing better, it took me a while to wrap my head around this. Perhaps it could just be the pant length bunching at the shoe versus a clean single break, or a billowing dress shirt versus a fitted shirt. All of these seemingly unnoticeable details add up to the noticeable difference between “a well dressed gent” and a “gent in progress.”

What details make the man then? Well let’s say wearing clothes that fit properly are the cake, accessories such as socks, jewelry, and ties are the icing. I once wrote that socks are the new ties, but now pocket squares are the new socks.

One of the most under appreciated tools in a man’s closet — a well chosen pocket square. A square ties an outfit together with a certain “je ne sais quoi.”

Our friends Ruku and Jas at Mitandio sent me over some pocket squares to test drive, and wow are they ever something. Crafted from pure silk and sporting eye popping designs that are sure to turn heads, they’ve become my new favorite toys. I say toys because I’ve yet to master how to fold them and it usually takes me a bit to play around with them it they’re just right. Katherine, on the other hand, folds them in one shot. What can I say, perhaps I’m a “gent in progress.”
