Dress to impress… Yourself?

A bit over a month ago, Alex Boone approached us to collaborate on a fashion photo shoot. We’ve had only positive experiences working with professional photographers since our blog baby was born — and Alex was no exception. While his forte is primarily candid street photography, his fashion photography could’ve fooled us!

We had a few equipment malfunctions at first (picture a giant 10-foot flash umbrella being carried away by the wind), and a couple distractions (two firetrucks responding to an alarm in the building we were shooting in front of), but at the end of the evening we finished with two memory cards full of awesome photos.

For this shoot, we wanted to achieve a high fashion and sartorial look — so clean lines, structure, and a lot of attention to detail. We often get asked, how do we describe our style? Even when asking each other, we had to sit on this question for a while. We dress in a way that makes us feel great when we wake up that morning, so our looks vary each day and its hard to identify a particular style.

Although we’re style bloggers, we have a confession. We know almost nothing about fashion (Shh..don’t tell though). Of course, we appreciate runway and the latest in fashion couture, but if you asked us to predict next seasons’ trends or critique the YSL fall 2013 collection, we’d be drawing up a blank. Hence why we prefer to call ourselves style bloggers instead of fashion bloggers. Fashion for us is really about personal style, as everyone can have their own unique style that makes them look good and feel great.

That being said, we can’t stress the importance of dressing well even for non-occasions. You never know who you’ll run into, and what opportunities may present themselves.

Other than dressing well to make a good impression on those around you, wearing clothes that make you look good make you feel more confident, and can even influence more positive behaviour and thought. This is called enclothed cognition, a phenomenon that explains why you might have a spring in your step when you’re wearing your best suit or favourite dress. Perhaps this gives validity to the saying, “look good, feel good, do great!” If you want to read more about how “clothes make the mind”, check out this article.

We could not agree more! We always talk about how differently we feel when we dress up versus when we don’t really put much effort in. And it is HUGE! When we dress up, it not only boosts our mood but how we see the day ahead of us is much brighter – When we don’t try our days always seem just a little bit gloomier (and we avoid everyone haha) Don’t dress for society, don’t dress for men/women, don’t dress for the imagine, dress for yourself!!

We’re so glad that someone else feels this way! If we put in a little extra effort to dress in a way that makes us feel like we look good, its a huge self-confidence booster. Who wouldn’t want that self-created positivity to take them throughout the day? Its like that feeling you get when you get all glammed up for a night out, or a fancy party, or date night, and you look at yourself and you’re happy with what you see in the mirror. Why reserve that feeling for special occasions when you can feel like that everyday!

Thanks lovely lady! I don’t normally wear pants (let alone white ones), so I’m glad that the look worked out. Haha I don’t know about power couple, but its a title that’s sweet enough to work towards! 😛
